Sample Instructions

Read all instructions thoroughly before starting

Filling Out Form

  • Fill out the form as completely as possible.

  • If you order more than one kit or have more than one sample number, fill out one form for each. (The Works kit will only have one sample number and only requires you to fill out one form per kit)

  • The sample number will be printed in the box, on the bags, and the sample vial.

  • Google Maps is a good tool for determining longitude and latitude. Just right-click on the map.

Sampling

  • Plan your collection with shipping in mind.

  • Collect samples early in the week. The less time spent in the mail, the better. If samples are shipped later in the week, the time spent in the mail can be increased. This can adversely affect DNA samples

  • Honey Kit

    • Take 2 to 3 bees from the hive, rinse them in alcohol, and place them into one of the small 3ml vials. Then, using the wooden stir stick, fill the second 3ml vial with honey from the hive.

  • DNA Kit

    • Collect half a cup of workers from inside the colony. It is best to collect bees from brood frames. Rinse the bees in 70% isopropyl alcohol. One of the easiest ways to do this is with an alcohol mite wash. Place the bees in the large sample cup after draining the alcohol. (There should only be bees in the cup, not alcohol)

Shipping

  • Place the sample in the provided ziplock bag.

    • The Works: The large sample cup goes in one ziplock bag, and the 2 3ml vials go into the other.

  • The wooden stir stick is discarded.

  • Remove the old shipping label from the box or ensure the provided return shipping label covers it completely.

  • Place samples in the box, seal it, and ship as soon as possible. If not shipped immediately, DNA can lose integrity.
